Luke Plunkett's House
Having a positive impact upon a community that has been so good to us has always been a major goal for Cascade Flooring America. A wonderful opportunity for us to give something back to this great community came along this fall when we heard about Llewellyn “Luke” Plunkett. Luke, 82, was a paratrooper in WWII and suffered injuries in a glider crash on D-Day along with 24 other troops in France. That pretty much ended his jumping career, but he returned to duty as a cook during the Battle of the Bulge.

After spending 50 years in California as an electronics repairman, Luke retired here in Vancouver in 1991. He bought an older house on Lincoln Avenue which has fallen into disrepair over the years. Unable to get any help from his family in California, things were looking pretty grim by March of 2006 when Vancouver Code Enforcement Supervisor, Richard Landis showed up ready to condemn the house. But instead of turning Luke out into the streets, Landis turned to the community for help. After all of the television and news coverage, there has been a steady stream of local business and individual volunteers working on Luke’s house.

Vancouver Mayor Royce Pollard and City Manager Pat McDonnell recently visited Luke in his nearly completed home. Luke says, “It’s wonderful,” and “It’s going to be beautiful.”

All of us here at Cascade feel privileged to have been invited to participate in this project, orchestrated by John Girod, Quail Homes. The following people donated their time and hard work: Hall & Associates (Debbie & Curtis Hall) installed the VCT flooring, Northwest Flooring ( Steve Walters) installed the laminate counters, The Carpet Workroom (Owen & Iris Cummings) provided carpet binding for area rugs in the bedroom, and Cascade Flooring America provided all the flooring and counter materials. Many thanks to all who participated with us!
